kyle lopez's death had hit him hard; not send him into depression and ruin his life kinda hard, but definitely hard enough for him to request two days off to process and to grieve.[break][break]

on the second day, he decides he needs closure. with conflicted feelings about visiting THE BORDER, he visits MT. CHIMNEY instead, though he's not naive enough to think he'd be able to find kyle's body buried somewhere beneath the soot.[break][break]

still, it's nice to see others trying. it fills him with hope.[break][break]

going down a detached path, cian strolls, lost in his thoughts before coming across someone.[break][break]

Cillian, too, seeks only to clear his head.[break][break]

He has been spending as much time outdoors as he can since escaping confinement; the very Hoennian sun that he'd once loathed was now a welcoming heat bearing down upon him. Anything was better than a cell.[break][break]

He chooses Mt. Chimney because the grunts he'd searched for with Raziel Beckett were still missing. If he should stumble upon some evidence while on a relaxing stroll, so be it.[break][break]

And he is relaxed. Until the Luxray padding at his side grows tense and parts her jaws. The Rocket underboss sets a hand gently on her mane to keep her calm, following her gaze.[break][break]

Cian freezes. Cillian does not.[break][break]

He whistles, and Scathach lunges for CIAN MAHER's throat with PSYCHIC FANGS.

ah. this must be what it feels like to be at war; instant aggression with no chance at finding common ground. no talks of diplomacy as optimists might suggest. only survival.[break][break]

he confuses his profanities as he hits the ground, slamming into the dirt to avoid having his throat ripped apart. the impact causes a pokeball to burst open, providing him a lifeline with his ORANGURU.[break][break]

rolling along the ground, he seeks to create distance.[break][break]

"we're in trouble maurice!"[break][break]

and though cian hadn't interacted with the previous rocket boss much, he remains all too familiar of their LUXRAY; cillian's may be different but it still evokes the same fear and dread.[break][break]

sensing as much, oranguru lets loose a PSYCHIC NOISE which is basically a loud, annoying screech.

Scathach's claws snap in empty air, and the Luxray growls as she whirls around to where Cian had impacted. Her tail lashes like a whip as she prowls closer.[break][break]

PSYCHIC NOISE erupts in sensitive ears, which she flattens against her head with a reproachful hiss. Though hurt, she spins to target the ape instead, lunging with SHADOW END.[break][break]

Cillian draws his gun and fires.

they're like fish out of water, flopping around gasping for air only to find themselves suffocating. this isn't the type of fights he's used to; there's only so much training and simulations can prepare him for; ORANGURU is the same.[break][break]

SHADOW END crashes into the psychic-type and tips it over. it slams into the ground, wind knocked out of it, PSYCHIC NOISE stopped.[break][break]

and, of course, there's the issue of the gun that fires. cian isn't expecting it. and it's only by sheer luck that he avoids death. the bullet lodges into his left shoulder. urgency rises at the trickling of blood.[break][break]

he hadn't wanted to use it but he has no choice. still rolling on the ground, another pokeball bursts open, activating his SYGNA SUIT at the same time.[break][break]

together, kecleo and cian disappear into their SHADOW SNEAK only to reappear near Cillian Quinn. the normal-type tries to SUCKER PUNCH the gun out of their hand while cian raises his to his sides.[break][break]

"can we please not fight?"

Cillian's certainly not expecting his prey to disappear so quickly. He especially doesn't expect they'll reappear closer to him, and is thus caught off guard by the Kecleon's surprise attack.[break][break]

The SUCKER PUNCH forces Cillian's wrist back at an odd angle, and his grip on the gun slackens in response to the pulse of pain. He drops it, but quickly places his foot on the weapon so that it could not be stolen and used against him.[break][break]

His eyes narrow on Cian as he rubs his sore wrist. Sprained, probably.[break][break]

"You knew the consequences."[break][break]

Yet he doesn't click his tongue. Not yet. He'd give Cian the briefest audience, interested in what sort of excuse he might have.

"In Blackwell's day, I'd have loved nothing more." Moreso when he'd been dragged to Hoenn against his will, separated from the group that had become like a family. But, "Difference is, I understand the promise I made."[break][break]

It had not been a spoken vow, no Hippocratic oath, but Cillian had signed his soul away to Rocket nevertheless.[break][break]

"Your father died for your selfish choice."[break][break]

And now Cillian would ensure Cian joined him.[break][break]

He clicks his tongue, and the Luxray CHARGES WILDLY toward CIAN MAHER.

Luxray skids on her paws, claws tearing into the earth to avoid slamming into the REFLECTIVE barrier that springs up in the path to her prey. The energy of the violent attack diffuses harmlessly against the psychic wall.[break][break]

Snarling, fur fluffed up around her mane and tail lashing, the shadow turns its attention to the one thing it can now reach unhindered: the faithful Oranguru.[break][break]

She lunges, FANGS glittering with ICE as she moves to tear out her opponent's throat.[break][break]

Cillian picks up his gun in the lull of combat, but the fired shot pings off the barrier and ricochets somewhere off the mountainside. Swearing, he releases his Aerodactyl, and the UMBRAL PREDATOR marks Cian as its PREY.[break][break]

Though retreating, Cillian's voice echoes enough in the open air that Cian might hear his command of, "KILL."[break][break]

It surges forth on AGILE wings tipped with black crystal.

after all this time and effort, why is running his first instinct? met with fight or flight, the champion-ranked gym leader and the vital city tournament champion still chooses to flee.[break][break]

how cowardly.[break][break]

it occurs to him too late. by the time he pulls out his pokeball and the beam of red shoots out at his oranguru, the psychic-type is no more. the beam misses its body as it collapses to the ICE FANGS.[break][break]

he is given no time to mourn.[break][break]

to escape the AGILE aerodactyl, cian is forced to slip into the ground, SHADOW SNEAKING away like a rat while his kecleon's SUCKER PUNCH helps ensure his escape.[break][break]

but then it, too, disappears with a SHADOW SNEAK, leaving oranguru behind as a sacrifice.

On one thing, Cillian and Cian can agree: it is better to survive another day than to die a hero. Heroes were mourned, celebrated, but they were not around to celebrate themselves.[break][break]

Survivors could grow stronger still.[break][break]

It is for that reason that Cillian doesn't underestimate CIAN MAHER. Why, even as the Vital City Champion runs, he does not hesitate to claim the life of a Pokémon just trying to protect its trainer.[break][break]

Why the SHADOW MIASMA curls cruel around the Oranguru and reanimates it.[break][break]

A SHADOW BALL slips into the space that Cillian himself can't reach, a parting shot to remember him by. His Aerodactyl reels back from the SUCKER PUNCH, shrieking furiously. It, too, can SNEAK through SHADOWS, but Cian has a headstart. Still, it pursues.
